EMWP staff are employed through the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii, Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit. emwp field technician - ID#26237One Regular, Full-Time position with Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit, East Maui Watershed Partnership in Makawao, Maui. Monthly Salary Range: $1,664.00 - $2,582.00 DutiesServes as a Watershed Field Technician involved in monitoring the native ecosystem and controlling feral animal populations, building and maintaining fence lines, controlling alien plant invasions using mechanical and chemical means, and performing other duties as assigned. Areas where the majority of work is performed are remote locations and require transportation via helicopter. Must be able to backpack up to twelve (12) miles over rough terrain or on thick and unmarked trail conditions with loads up to fifty (50) pounds, camp out in remote areas and/or under extreme conditions for up to a week at a time. Must not be afraid of heights due to the need to fly by helicopter to remote locations and hiking on or near vertical exposures. Maps invasive species locations, current and proposed fence lines, recording control work and pesticide usage, and assisting in public relations activities. Must adhere to equipment use, maintenance, and inventory of tools, equipment and supplies. RequirementsEducation: High School Diploma or GED. Experience: One to three (1-3) years of experience in work related to research (feral animal and alien plant control) or agriculture with a land management agency or company. Abil/Know/Skills: Knowledge of native Hawaiian flora and fauna and threats from alien species. Ability to operate power tools including chain saws, weed eaters, generators, chipper, etc. Must hold a valid current driving license and be able to drive a 4-wheel Drive and All-Terrain vehicle with manual transmission. Ability to communicate orally and in writing and to comprehend complex verbal and written instructions. Physical/Medical Requirements: Able to camp in remote rainforest locations for up to five (5) consecutive days, two (2) to three (3) times a month in inclement weather. Ability to hike up to twelve (12) miles on irregular terrain with backpacks weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Desirable Qualifications: Fieldwork with emphasis on feral animal and alien plant control with a land management agency. Previous fence building or construction experience.
