The rare tree known as Mahoe was once much more common in the dry forests of Haleakala on Maui. The fleshy seed covering was eaten by early Hawaiians and has a sweet taste. The seed, also edible, tastes mild. Nonnative insects and rats also like to eat the seeds, leading to a sharp decline in the number of Mahoe seedlings in the wild.
