In 1952 the future of the Nene looked bleak.  Its numbers dwindled down to 30 birds and it seemed a matter of time until extinction.  However, conservationists brought the Nene back and successfully bred and reintroduced 800 birds into the wild in 2004, as well as keeping 1,000 in zoos and captivity.  The Nene is an amazing and unique creature that has survived despite all odds and is now known as Hawaii's state bird.  It is listed as an endangered species.
