The Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle or Honu (Chelonia mydas) was once a prolific species in Hawaii.  Honu were a source of food, tools, medicine, and ornamentation for early Hawaiians.  Upon western contact the Honu were exploited and populations plummeted until they were listed as endangered in 1978.  Their federal protection has given the Honu a second chance and populations are growing throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
