The Loulu in the background (Pritchardia forbesiana) was planted in the Arboretum at Pu'u Mahoe. It was brought down from 'Eke crater in 1952 as a seedling 1 foot tall.  The Hawaiian Dictionary describes Loulu being used in plaiting hats with leaves bleached white.  The Loulu palm leaves were also used for protection from rain and sun, like an umbrella.  In the foreground is Pritchardia arecina which is endemic to the north slope of Haleakala.
