The Maui Slam - Words for the Watershed
is a spoken word performance competition open to anyone who wants to get up on stage and share their mana'o with their peers and the community about the Hawaiian Forest, our natural heritage.

Sunday September 24, 2006 at the McCoy Studio Theater, Maui Arts and Cultural Center. 6:00 pm sign-up, 7:00 pm slam. $10 for poets students, & seniors; $15 all others.

It's a talk story - slam style - about the places you hike, surf, hunt, fish, live, work, play, and love.

Poems can be about the environment, watersheds, native Hawaiian species, the threat of invasive species. It can be about malama i ka 'aina, what the 'aina means to you, what you do for it, it's past, present, or future. You get the idea.

Why Slam?

In the words of "Youth Speaks", a national youth spoken word organization, "it starts with your word as a tool to aid a generation in finding its potential". Whether you are a student or an adult, this is your chance to voice your opinion about what matters to you - the land on which you live.

Poetry Slams are alive and popular all around the world. Oahu boasts the largest registered slam group, over 600 people show up to their monthly First Thursdays Slams. Maui Booksellers has been holding monthly slams at various venues, every Last Sunday. Check out Maui Slam.

The word is catching on.
